Presenter: Linda Muri

Three-time world champion Linda Muri began rowing as an undergraduate at MIT after spending her freshman year competing on the Field Hockey, Basketball, and Track & Field teams. Following her graduation with a Bachelors degree in Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering, she began working at Composite Engineering, Inc., West Concord, MA, manufacturers of Van Dusen Racing Boats. Her work there combined R&D on cutting edge racing shell and flat-water canoe and kayak designs. She also learned composite boat building from design to finished product.

Linda returned to rowing in pursuit of a US National team berth and began working for Riverside Boat Club, Cambridge, MA, where she repaired and serviced their rowing fleet. Finding success on the US National team, she prepared for her eventual retirement from elite rowing by pursuing a Masters Degree in Education from Harvard with an eye toward teaching Physics. Before retirement happened, however, a move to Ithaca, NY, put her back on the path to coaching. Although Linda had coached at Simmons College, Boston, MA, and before that at the Middlesex School, Concord, MA, it was not until she began coaching at Cornell University while continuing to compete for the US team that she found her calling. At Cornell, she worked with the Lightweight Men’s squad where in her first year, her Freshman team earned a silver medal at the Eastern Sprints. Following 3 years at Cornell, Linda spent the next 13 years in Cambridge, MA, as the assistant coach of the Harvard Men's Lightweight Crew.

At Harvard, Linda significantly contributed to the success of the program by leading the Crimson Freshman Lightweights to seven Eastern Sprints medals and five IRA medals. Some of her duties included working as the head recruiter, developing and implementing year-round training and injury-prevention programs, and coordinating team travel. Her next move was to Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, where she became the head coach for the Women’s Rowing Team before setting out on her next adventure.
