Program Description
The Learn to Row program is offered to 6th and 7th grade students who attend the Bromfield School or are Harvard residents who attend a publicly funded charter, technical or vocational school.
The program is offered on Saturdays (with one Sunday) which we feel keeps the time commitment for the kids fun, allow us to provide a wider variety of activities, access to more equipment and makes it easier for parents to schedule our unique program for their child.
Our goal is to offer a fun fitness program that includes learning to row. Offered in 6 sessions, the time is spent learning the basics of rowing and expanding the skills of those who are returning to the program. We have included additional time for transitions between getting ready to row, discussing the plan of the day and getting the boats on and off the water.
If a land workout is needed due to the weather, it will include age-appropriate instruction on activities such as rowing on the ergometer, running, calisthenic circuits, core strengthening and yoga.
On the water, participants will learn to scull in a stable, single-person boat built for beginners. Based on their skill, participants may progress to a two-person or four-person boat. Inter-squad fun challenges and games will keep things lively.

Physical dated within 13 months of the last day of the program.
To comply with state regulations, physical exams are required every thirteen months to the day of the exam. For example, if a student-athlete has a physical exam dated August 1, 2022, that exam will expire on September 1, 2023, meaning as of September 2, 2023, the student-athlete becomes ineligible to practice or compete until they present proof of a current physical exam to the BHRA Registrar. If your child's physical will expire during the spring season, please schedule a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible and submit the updated physical to the BHRA Registrar BEFORE the expiration date. There will be no exceptions to this rule, nor will there be extensions granted based upon a doctor’s note. If you have a current physical on file with BHRA that meets this date criteria, you do NOT need to resubmit this form.
Swim Test (Download form)
Returning rowers who have this form on file do not need to resubmit this form. This form is submitted only once and covers an athlete for each season. New rowers: Even if you have achieved a high level of swimming or certification, this form must be submitted.
Swim Tests: Contact Swymfit, 90 Swanson Rd, Boxborough, MA or your local pool.
Required forms and payment will only be accepted either online in this registration at the upload questions near the end, or via email to BHRA Admin bhraadmin@barehillrowing.com. All forms are due by Wednesday, September 6, at 11:59pm. Incomplete registration will result in loss of registration slot reservation.
